Hi folks,
A few new theories about the sinking of the Titanic have been presented.
It was previously thought that the Titanic split into 2 main portions and then sank. This is only partially true. After it split, it then compressed again. And then it sank.
The iceberg didn't only rip open the side of the ship. It also ripped open the bottom. Explorers recently found a piece of the bottom of the Titanic. It had evidence of a rip in the bottom. So, the iceberg actually caused more damage than previously thought.
It has been known for many years that the metal in the hull of the Titanic was too stiff. The stiffness caused plates of metal to slide sideways and pop numerous rivots. This exposed huge, gaping holes in the Titanic immediately after striking the iceberg.
These new theories also help to explain why the Titanic sank so fast.
The "explosions" that survivors reported hearing as the Titanic was sinking were actually just compressed air trapped in the stern of the ship.
The Titanic really was doomed from the moment it struck the iceberg. It didn't have a chance.
